Stampin' Up! Fact Sheet
Shelli Gardner and her sister grew up in Kanab, Utah. They each married, left their hometown and started families. During this time they discovered rubber stamping and were instantly intrigued by the hobby. They searched for a rubber stamp company to meet their needs--one that offered a complete line of stamps and utilized the right direct-sales approach.
Unable to find the right mix, the sisters decided to build their own company. They imagined the possibilities of creating a stamp company that offered a wide variety of stamp styles, high-quality accessories and an ongoing commitment to customer service and sharing the art of rubber stamping with family and friends through home workshops.
They envisioned the company working much like a family, where each demonstrator could participate at whatever level worked best for her personal circumstances. Shelli Gardner invested her family's savings to begin Stampin' Up! in 1988. During the first year, orders were filled from Shelli's living room. Today Stampin' Up! employees fill orders from Stampin' Up!'s 300,000-square-foot home office located in Riverton, Utah.
Initially, Stampin' Up! offered rubber stamps designed by other companies, but soon the company began custom designing, manufacturing, and selling its own exclusive designs of rubber stamp sets and accessories. The first Stampin' Up! product catalog was 64 pages; today the Stampin' Up! Idea Book & Catalog is over 200 pages and features a variety of full-color photographs of stamp projects, as well as an impressive line of rubber stamps and accessories. Stampin' Up!'s exclusive color-coordinated papers, markers, stamp pads, and refills virtually eliminate the guesswork involved in matching stamping projects.
Stampin' Up!'s fresh designs, production of quality, wood-mounted rubber stamps, and unique packaging based on combining stamps in sets of coordinated images make it a leader in the hobby and craft industry. Many stamp sets also complement other stamp sets--a concept that offers customers value and versatility.
Stampin' Up! has received the Utah Work/Life Award from the Utah Department of Workforce Services in 2004 and 2005. The company received this prestigious award for being among Utah's 10 most family-friendly companies. Award criteria include policies regarding benefits, time off, child and elder care, and tuition reimbursement. Other factors, such as the encouraging community involvement and work/life balance, are also considered. Stampin' Up! provides employees with a generous benefits package and other positive company activities to encourage employee relationship building. Stampin' Up! constantly strives to foster a pleasant workplace where employees feel appreciated and enjoy the flexibility of work/life balance.
Making a Difference
In 2003 Stampin' Up! launched its Making a Difference campaign, designed to facilitate giving by the home office and promote service among demonstrators and employees.
The company annually donates $100,000 to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), as well as proceeds from the sale of an exclusive stamp set designed to promote the RMHC partnership. To date, more than $206,000 has been donated from RMHC stamp set sales. Throughout North America, demonstrators coordinate volunteer efforts at Ronald McDonald Houses in their areas. Stampin' Up! has donated $1.1 million to the September 11th Disaster Relief Fund from proceeds of exclusive stamp set sales, and over $82,000 to the Huntsman Cancer Institute for breast cancer research. To support the Asian tsunami disaster relief effort, Stampin' Up! donated more than $575,000 to Save the Children, and more than $50,000 went to victims of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. In 2006, Stampin' Up! worked with its demonstrators to donate maore than $70,000 to the American Heart Association.
Stampin' Up! is committed to improving the lives of others through various philanthropic endeavors. In addition to monetary support, Stampin' Up! also encourages its demonstrators and employees to donate time and share creativity with those in need.
Stampin' Up!'s mission statement, called its Statement of the Heart, reads: "To love what we do and share what we love, as we help others enjoy creativity and worthwhile accomplishments . . . in this we make a difference."
