Let's All Bring Birthdays Back

By Shannon West, Demonstrator Training Manager

It started one Saturday in January. I was kicking myself for not sending out my Christmas cards, but I also noticed that many friends had simply posted their Christmas cards on Facebook rather than sending them in the mail. For years I’ve complained about Facebook ruining birthday cards and now it would seem the same was happening to Christmas cards. A handmade, handwritten card in the mailbox seemed to be nearly extinct—and I was contributing to the problem! I wanted to do something drastic and immediate to stop this neglect and hold myself accountable.

So that Saturday in January, I made a decision: I posted on Facebook that I would send a birthday card to any of my friends that wanted one. I didn’t think about the possibilities or consequences…I just posted and was astonished when the responses started rolling in.

After 24 hours, I had over 300 responses…far more than I had ever received on a previous post. I started a spreadsheet to keep track and went to work making and sending birthday cards.

Two days later, I posted a photo of my first set of cards that I was sending. At this point, my posts started to be shared and others started posting that they were also sending cards to their friends. These results were an absolute surprise!

As my friends began receiving their cards, they posted photos of them on social media to thank me. This sparked another idea: there needed to be a way to easily see all the cards—my cards and others’ cards too—so that we could see all the different ideas to CASE (Copy And Share Everything). Playing on the lyrics of a Justin Timberlake song, the hashtag #imbringingbirthdaysback was born! I wanted to stamp it on each card so that the receiver would know to use the hashtag if they posted the card, so I carved my very own #imbringingbirthdaysback stamp.

stack

As my spreadsheet of birthdays grew (it’s currently 1,327 names strong!), the sharing grew. There is something special about a birthday. It’s your special day—you get to dictate what happens that day and it’s yours to own and craft. And EVERYONE has one. It seems this unexpectedly played into the development of this movement. And it wasn’t difficult to sense the happiness and excitement that one feels when simply sending cards…that was a factor in the excitement that built around the movement too, of course.

After a few weeks, Sara approached me and asked how Stampin’ up! could support the movement—after all, making and sending cards is what Stampin’ Up! has always been focused on (Shelli still sends every single employee a birthday card each year!).  I also got to share my story on a local news program: Good Things Utah. (You can watch the host make a birthday card below.)

Ultimately, Sara and I decided that Stampin’ Up! would manufacture a #imbringingbirthdaysback stamp, as the stamp is what ties all the cards together into one giant-sized birthday party! In fact, Stampin’ Up! took my carved design and is making a single wood-mount stamp, which will be available globally while supplies last.

IBBB
Keep tabs on Stampin’ Up!’s social media feeds or check back here for the exact availability date. But you don’t need to wait for the stamp to join in the movement. Start creating and sending your own birthday cards to friends, family, neighbors, coworkers and more. Let’s bring birthdays back together!

This is a great idea. Sounds kind of sad that i got out of the habit of sending an actual card. It is always nice to get real mail in the mailbox - and I don't mean on the computer. I can't wait to view the cards that others have made. Thanks, Martha

What a wonderful idea. We need to be sending more actual "cards" in the mail, the Internet has taken the specialty out of the sending of cards. With hand made cards it shows the person that you really took time and care to recognize the "birthday/ occasion" whatever it may be to send them a heartfelt card. I know I will always be making cards and sending them for as long as I can. I just hope those who recieve my cards understand what it took to make it for them.

Bravo! It's one of the main reasons I joined Stampin' Up! so I could afford to send my 100 plus cards a year. (Australia's postal system is a little expensive.) But the comments and the joy cards bring is worth every cent. I never expected all the enjoyment card making and sending brings me and my card making group. I call it my Ministry of Cards.

Awesome Shannon! Soon you'll be World Famous! My late husband always said, "we have hundreds (slight exaggeration!) of cards around here, yet you don't send them out." It wasn't ENTIRELY true, but it did make me think. So I'm on board, Shannon, and I'm going to make it a point to send out not only birthday cards, but others as well. I have a dear young friend who was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. I've been sending her not only get well cards and other appropriate messages, but inappropriate ones as well, including congrats on your pregnancy, and happy Thanksgiving cards and such. Because we know each other, they make her laugh, and as we all know, it's the best medicine. So thanks for the inspiration Shannon. We all need to take a page from your playbook.

I brought birthdays and sympathy/get well/thinking of you cards back to my life this past year. My kids have always gotten handmade bday cards from me, but having surgery, developing a life-threatening infection and still being unable to drive, go to church (!), I had to do SOMETHING to minister to others, so I started a card ministry. This is a GREAT idea - and I am SO excited about this stamp!!!!!

This needs to be my personal motto for the year. I have so much invested in this wonderful endeavor but can't manage to get cards out to my wonderful family and friends! I need to put my good intentions down on paper and get them out in the mail. I would be a much happier camper if i would just do it instead of simply thinking about it. count me in!

  • Christine Jannetto

    Oct 21

Shannon - This is so awesome! Reading your words are like reading my very own thoughts too. This year was the first year ever that I didn't make and send out Xmas cards and saw too that a lot of people posted them on Facebook or a collage they made instead and thought it was a sad transition to being more disconnected in this wonderful world we live in. I've been looking for inspiration to begin crafting again since we've moved & finally are settled and this I have to tell you is it! I love this movement and stamp set and can't wait to order and begin using it. I'm hoping this lends itself to bringing Xmas cards back too. :) Thank you for this and for putting it out there for everyone to join in!

I make and send cards continuously. I am a member of a Red Hat group and also a book club. Every member of both groups gets a handmade card from me. Of course, there is also my craft group and friends. I love making and send my SU cards. Love the # stamp and think it will make a great "signature". Thank you

I think this is an AWESOME idea! I really don't like that it seems everything is done over social media these days. I enjoy getting things in the mail and I remember when I was a child, getting birthday cards from my Grandparents or graduation cards and wedding announcements and such. This could be a lot of fun! I'm thinking about joining in! :)

I spent the weekend in Ocean City Maryland at a "crop". I spent the entire weekend making beautiful Stampin' Up! cards for my family and friends for the coming year of birthday (didn't get them all made, but got a great start). I love sending handmade cards to people and will be working on this during my free craft time....

  • Jacque Coombs

    Oct 21

I recently heard about this idea - after I had already decided that I was going to send out birthday and anniversary cards to all my family members as well as old friends and my friends at church (our monthly newsletter has a list of upcoming birthdays and anniversaries). I saw a post by 2 demonstrators on how they organized their cards. I had to change it up a bit since I had way more cards - I have one shoe box with dividers - Birthday, Masculine Birthday, Sympathy/Get Well, Thanks, Just Because, Anniversary/New baby and in my 2nd shoe box I have dividers for the months of the year and attached to the front of each month are all the birthdays/anniversaries for that month. I also keep envelopes and dividers for holidays in that box as there is plenty of room (the first box is crammed full). I also put my return labels and postage stamps in that box. My addresses are stored on my computer. At the end of the month, I move cards from my card box to my month box appropriate to who they are going to. I write in pencil the date where the stamp will eventually cover it, and I address everything. I'm doing well keeping up with the process this way and I'm not stressed about getting cards out late or forgetting altogether. My family and friends are loving receiving handmade cards and I feel great that I'm remembering them in a special way.

  • Nancy B

    Oct 21

I think this is what we should all do however I can relate to times I don't even have time and send email messages or call the celebrant on their birthdays. Let's just be understanding and try our hardest to send cards; simple or elaborate!

  • Ruth Koehler

    Oct 21

The stamp looks like a good idea. I'm tired of seeing people saying happy birthday on FB including myself saying it. I like to make and send cards to my friends and family

  • Erika Hayes

    Oct 21

I love this! Completely-- I was going to let my demo ship go-- I am just so overwhelmed by all the changes and I can't keep up seems like everyone wants to be a star and no one just wants to make pretty stuff anymore... SO I have decided to maintain my Demoship and help with this movement! BUT not just birthdays but anniversaries and thinking of you -- I think it should be a #benice movement... and lets see how many lives we can change with just a card and a sweet thought!

  • Sharon Daniel

    Oct 21

I love this stamp!! My friends and I have always made handmade cards for each other. Unfortunately, we have been doing this for so long that the stress of outdoing the last one and our busy schedules, we are sometimes as much as 3 to 6 months behind in getting them to each other. They are always a work of art and I still have every one I have received.

  • Evelyn

    Oct 21

I'm excited this movement is gaining traction and the stamp will be available long-term. However, it is HUGE! Is there any chance we can have a smaller (2-3 inches wide) stamp suitable for stamping in the left-hand corner of the front of an envelope? This is where I stamp a coordinating image or greeting on the cards I send. Thanks!

I get lots of monthly planners in the fall for the next year and I immediately write in all the family and friend birthdays. Then I make cards to mail the month before each birthday. They get mailed 4 or 5 days before ones special day and it has worked for me for many years now. So many people have said they have every card they have received and I feel blessed by their replies. I'm just happy so many will jump on the opportunity to expand their chance to let more see how beautiful a little card and note can be.

So far, the response has been fantastic as these wonderful ladies love their handmade card, handwritten sentiment, and receiving it in the mail rather than through email. As a Stampin' Up! demonstrator I've refused to give up sending cards to family and friends and even make them as gifts for others to "guilt" them into sending them. I'm excited about your movement, not just for birthdays, but for the wonderful gift of giving to others.

I love this! What adorable stamp you carved! My inlaws recently went to a bday party for a friend turning 100 years old. She asked me to make a card, because how many choices would you have from the store? She was afraid that everyone at the party would give him the same card. He loved the special card I made! I agree that birthdays are special; you shouldn't have to turn 100 to get a special card.

You are right this is a lost thing these days. People still love getting cards in the mail. I am a pastors wife who is using my gift to cheer others. I also make cards for our secret sisters program so no one has to purchase cards for their secret sister. Thank you for bringing birthdays back.

Love this idea. I had a similar revelation at the end of last year when I realized I was spending so much on the products and not really using them. I just knew I had them just in case. So I decided to start small with my co-workers. Each one of them will receive a birthday card during the staff meeting of their birthday month. I only have to remember one date a month and of course who has a birthday that month. For January there were 5 birthdays. It is a small start but it is a start. Now on to my family.

Congratulations Shannon, I always think a card especially handmade is the best thing someone can receive for their birthday, as it takes time and lots of love goes into designing and making it. Wow to think SU has made your stamp for us to purchase and use, what a buzz for you, I hope you are very proud of yourself for this to happen. SU is such a wonderful company and I am so happy and honoured to be a part of it as a Demonstrator myself. I hope that I am able to purchase this stamp Hopefully SU can make a Stamp Set with # imbringing******back. 4013216 Demonstrator Dapto NSW Australia

Shannon, so the same thing happened to me regarding my Christmas cards..I was sitting at my kitchen table and I was upset that I didn't get my Christmas cards completed or mailed out. I was thinking, am I the only one that feels this way? So I decided at that moment that I was putting together a "Get It Done" Christmas Card class! I reached out to my customers telling them about my thoughts and what I wanted to do to make sure this didn't happen to me this year. I had 10 ladies join! I am NOT the only one that this happened too! So each month Jan-Nov of this year, I am holding a class to "Get It Done!"
