A Woman to Watch: Local entrepreneur sets a corporation milestone
May 16, 2008
SHAWANO, WI – The US scrapbooking and paper crafting market is a multi-billion dollar industry. The explanation for the success of this industry can be attributed to women like Mary Polcin of Shawano, Wisconsin. On May 13, Mary set a new, corporate record for personally selling over $1 million of crafting products. An independent sales consultant for Stampin’ Up! a leading direct sales manufacturer of decorative rubber stamps and crafting accessories, Mary is the first independent consultant or “demonstrator” of approximately 47,000 global Stampin’ Up! sales consultants to achieve this prestigious goal.
Mary began building clientele, selling stamping and crafting product, and recruiting and training a line of women entrepreneurs under her leadership in 1997 and has never looked back. In July 2007, Mary was awarded as one of the Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators of the Year and was honored at the annual company convention in Denver, Colorado. The award is given to the top demonstrators in sales and recruiting for the year.
“Mary epitomizes the success that can be achieved by women who have a passion for what they do,” says Shelli Gardner, co-founder and CEO of Stampin’ Up! “She has enriched the lives of so many others by sharing what she loves, and encouraging their successes. She is an incredible leader and an inspiration to all of us, and we are extremely fortunate to count her among our Stampin’ Up! family.”
“Over a year ago, I made it my goal to reach that million-dollar total,” says Polcin. I knew it was a journey I was going to take. It’s been a hard year with the economy, and so many things changing. But I knew I had a strong business and my customers are always there for me.”
Mary has won numerous other awards at Stampin’ Up! including Highest Personal Sales award in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007; served on Stampin’ Up!’s Advisory Board in 2004 and was named as a Demonstrator of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
In speaking with other demonstrators who know Mary, you’ll hear them use the same words to describe her: kind, generous, and inspiring. In the words of demonstrator Toni Miller (2004-2005 Advisory Board member,) “Mary fulfills our mission statement [called the Statement of the Heart] by leaps and bounds.”
